 Gas Saving Tips Minimize
Just how much can I save on Gas?
by, Tony Zanders

With gas prices over $4.00/gallon, and crude oil futures selling at historical highs, it seems our mobile culture is taking a big hit - right in the pocket book. Hundreds of articles and newsletters like this are being written all over the country to address the universal, though unasked question, “How can I fill up my gas tank and still maintain my lifestyle?” USA Today reported in 2007 that the average miles driven that February had declined over the previous year for the first time in 26 years.* Whether we like it or not, the rising cost of gas is affecting our lives in one way or another.

The question that we are being asked almost every day is, How can I improve my fuel economy?I wish there were an easy answer for that. The simple truth is that not every vehicle is the same, and there’s not one answer that works for every driving situation.

As I have been researching this subject I have seen dozens of products and hundreds of claims that you can improve YOUR fuel economy anywhere from 1% to 50% just by using their product, additive, widget, gizmo, thing-a-magig, or “snake oil.” Some are even so confident they are willing to guarantee it.

So, to answer some of the valid and pressing questions that I am being asked lately, here’s my take on saving gas:
  1. Drive less. No, I’m not being funny. What I mean is consolidate trips, carpool, dust off the bicycle, walk down the street for a newspaper. Whatever you can do to keep from turning the key in your vehicle will save you gas. It will not improve your fuel economy while you are driving, but it may save you as much as a tank of gas per month if you are a busy family like ours. (That’s over $100 for most of the bigger vehicles out there.)
  2. Slow down. Consumer Reports has done a number of tests that show a marked decline in fuel economy when you accelerate aggressively or drive faster than you need to. One test even documented a 5 mpg increase in fuel economy by driving 55 mph instead of 65 mph in their test car, a Toyota Camry.
  3. Keep up on your maintenance. That’s not a sales pitch. It’s been well documented that poor vehicle maintenance has a direct affect on fuel efficiency and the cost of ownership. Simple maintenance like oil changes and tire pressure will produce a 1-3% improvement in efficiency. A study of drivers from 1960 to 2000 in CA revealed that proper maintenance has a significant effect on the overall cost of ownership across the board. The study cited that a driver who did not perform regular maintenance, but simply gassed up and drove, and only fixed what broke, would spend an average of $0.24/mile overall. Contrast that with the driver who took the time to perform regular maintenance and keep up on the recommended service schedule. That driver would have invested only about $0.12 per mile average, including all services and repairs. (Take into account that the cost of fuel at the time of this study was well below $3.00/gallon. Today that cost per mile would be slightly higher.) The conclusion was that it costs almost 2 times as much to neglect your vehicle as it does to keep it properly maintained.
  4. What about the “Widget” they sell? Will it really help? This is one of the most common types of questions I get asked. Does it help to add an aftermarket air filter? Can my car run on water? Should I install the (take your pick of products) on my car? Here is my reply to most of the aftermarket ideas out there. If you are driving a ’95 or newer vehicle, there are not many add-ons that are going to make a lot of difference. The reason for that is the technology of the last decade has evolved drastically to produce much better efficiency than earlier generations of fuel management. My standard answer is “There’s no harm in trying, but will it save you as much as it costs to buy it and put it on?” If you can improve your economy by 15% you could recover a $30 - $50 investment in as little as 3** tanks of gas. The question is, “Will you actually see that much of a change?” I’m not so sure. A more expensive device costing around $300 and offering a 5% increase in efficiency will take approximately 75** fill-ups to recover. That could be 2 years of driving in some vehicles. Remember, there are hundreds of scam artists out there just waiting to get into your wallet. Do your research, don’t waste your money on lofty claims, and don’t pay hundreds or thousands of dollars to save pennies.
